How to Choose a Log Bunk Bed

June 22nd, 2008 by talliehisko

By C. J. Haus So youve got the perfect little log cabin, or chalet by the lake, or just want a country touch to your home. You want a log bunk bed, or two, but dont know where to start. And they dont carry them in your downtown furniture store. Not to worry, there are plenty of options available on the Internet. There are loft log bunk beds, twin over twin log bunk beds, full over full or even twin over queen. I havent seen a twin over king yet, but really the Amish can make any size you want. A lot of college students who looking to build an inexpensive loft bed might find an Amish loft bunk bed to be just the ticket, and some of them come with futons under them, too. There are federal regulations regarding bunk beds, so youll want to make sure that whatever bed you choose meets the regulations. Were talking safety here, and things do happen. But you certainly wouldnt want a bed that doesnt meet the regulations, so make sure that the one you buy, does. Most accidents with bunk beds happen to children under the age of three. Many of these accidents can be avoided by having safety rails on both sides of the top bed. If one side of the bed is against the wall, that can be sufficient–but it must be against the wall. There are also regulations regarding headboards. There is a link to a page with the regulations at the bottom of this article for those who wish to read further. Bunk beds built to those regulations are generally built to hold an adult weighing up to 250 pounds. If you are pushing the limits, try cedar instead of pine. In the beds we sell, the cedar logs are 5 to 6 inches in diameter, while the pine is about 3 inches in diameter. They are both built to federal specifications, and the pine bunk beds are very solid and strong, but if there is a question in your mind, go for the bigger logs. And of course, you can always put the big fella on the bottom, too. Some log bunk beds come with a metal frame to hold the mattress, but some of the Amish build them with a wood frame to hold both the box spring and the mattress. You dont have to put a box spring in those beds, but you certainly can. The other alternative to hold the mattress up is called a Bunkie board. A Bunkie board is basically inch plywood cut to the size of the box spring. It sits inside either the metal bed frame, or the wood bed frame, and supports the mattress. If you have a box spring you dont need a Bunkie board, but if there is not a box spring, the Bunkie board is what supports the middle of the mattress. We sell Bunkie boards if people want them, but a lot of people just cut their own. Its up to the buyer. Another option to consider is the type of ladder you want with your log bunk bed. Some of the Amish beds have the ladders built right into the end of the bed, so you dont have a ladder leaning out from the bed. Others have a moveable ladder that can hook on the end or the side. In many cases, the amount of space available determines the type of bunk bed you buy. If you have a small room, the larger cedar logs may seem too massive. If you dont have room for a slanted ladder, however, you may opt for the cedar bunk bed anyway that has the ladder built in. If you have a larger room or larger people, you may opt for the larger cedar logs. If you get a pine bunk bed with metal frame, there is a way to give the metal frame that log look when the covers are thrown back. These are decorative half logs or rails, not to be confused with the safety rails that go around the top of the bunk bed. The top safety rails are always included with the log bunk bed, but the decorative half rails are optional and just for looks. Last but not least, be sure to measure before you buy. Last year we sold a couple of log bunk beds to somebody in Montana. They absolutely loved the beds, but had bought two for the room and soon found out that only one could comfortably fit. Since we are in Michigan and they in Montana, it would have cost quite a bit to ship it back. They ended up selling the extra bed on ebay, but the problem could have been avoided with a bit of careful measuring up front. God is in Full Control

June 19th, 2008 by talliehisko

By Saundra L. Washington For many students of the Bible who are sincerely struggling to establish some type of clear and relatively stable theological perspective, the concept of God as sovereign God is a very important doctrine that demands serious study. It is not sufficient to simply acknowledge that God is all-knowing, all powerful and omnipresent, but we must have some understanding of the nature and essence of God at a deeper level so that the significance of His sovereignty is known in a meaningful way. From a very early age, I had always been taught that God can do anything but fail. I was told that God is omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, loving, just and so on; that nothing happens in life that was in contradiction to His will. And yet, the world was (and is) wrought with the terrible realities of injustice, persecution, and oppression. In my mind, I could not conceive of a God who permitted so much wrong to prevail in the world in which He was ruler. I often thought to myself, Was it Gods will that Blacks should be enslaved and accorded an inferior status in society? Was it Gods will that Hitler and his regime should torture and murder six million Jews? Was it Gods will that thousands of innocent children should be slaughtered or fall victim to crimes of all kinds and treated as objects rather than people? If God is just and in charge, then why are the innocent called upon to die or suffer so needlessly? The book of Isaiah stands out in my mind as having been of tremendous help as I grappled with these and other questions. I read about how Assyria had become a threatening world power and had defeated Judah where Isaiah had lived and prophesied. How God acts in history became clearer to me as I understood the destruction of Gods people by a pagan nation. In the final analysis, Assyria unwittingly became the instrument of Gods purposes. Assyria seemed to be in control, but, in reality, was not. God was and God is. Slowly, I began to comprehend the truth behind my cloud of questions. I began to see that history, past, present and future is indeed in Gods control and that He acts within the freedom of His own economy toward accomplishing His purposes. Therefore, I cannot say that God wills all that happens. But, what I can say is that whatever happens, God is Lord over it. In events where men in their freedom defy God, forces like Nazism, slavery, and communism inevitably develop. Yet, even these forces are brought under Gods sovereignty. God is not defeated by a Hitler or Stalin, nation or country. On the contrary, God is able to make such use of them that in time His purposes rather than mans are affected. My personal perspective no longer takes into account the questions of the human condition as it relates to Gods justice. Rather, I see God’s justice as it relates to and in the midst of the human condition. I firmly rest in the knowledge and assurance that God is in final control. Affirmation Child’s Craft - Building Self-Esteem With a Two-Part Craft Project

June 15th, 2008 by talliehisko

By Connie Bowen One thing I know for sure its never too early to start learning to think positive! Here is a simple craft that children ages five through seven will enjoy creating. It involves two parts: one is making the three dimensional craft, and the other is writing and repeating an affirmation. Affirmations are positive first-person statements written in the present tense. They are often repeated throughout the day. Its all a matter of giving our subconscious minds a positive blueprint for a happy, abundant life. This project is suitable for a small group of children also, for say a classroom or a church group. Materials needed: (available at your local craft store) A small mirror, maybe 2-3 inches in diameter. It can be any shape. It neednt be perfectly round. A small amount of air-dry nontoxic colored clay. Crayola makes a brand of clay that will work fine. Because it is air-dry clay, the project will not have to be baked in an oven, and it will harden in 24 hours. Method: Step 1. Each child chooses a small amount of colored clay. The clay can be squished and blended, streaked or whatever design the children want to do. Step 2. Mold the clay into a lumpy ball shape. Place one edge of the mirror on the top of the lump and push down, so that the bottom of the lump now makes a flat base, and the mirror is partway stuck into the clay. The lump should now stand up by itself, with the mirror placed firmly in the top part of the clay. Step 3. The lump can be decorated by pushing in the blunt end of a pencil to make holes, and/or striations can be created by drawing lines in the clay with an open paper clip. The children can leave their thumb prints in one area, and smear another area so it is smooth. The only limit is the childs imagination and common tools found around the house. Clay can be placed on the top edge of the mirror also, to hold it in place. Wipe the mirror clean before the clay completely dries. Set aside this lovely mirror creation. The second half of the project involves writing an affirmation to go along with the mirror. Some sample affirmations would be I value myself. I honor who I am. I am worthy. I love myself. My life is filled with good things. My life is filled with love. I appreciate my special skills and talents. A good point to remember is to phrase the affirmation so it has meaning to each individual child. Affirmations can be used to change the energy around any situation. As an example: If a child is having difficulty in a certain area of their life, or in school, an affirmation can be used to change and heal the energy around that situation. Repeating I feel loved and protected all day long, would help a child dealing with fearful thoughts of feeling alone and vulnerable. I know what is best for me, for a child dealing with peer pressure. As long as the affirmation feels natural and not forced, it will have a calming, soothing effect. Its very important to phrase affirmations in positive terms, not in negative ones. As an example, saying I am no longer selfish is not an affirmation, and would undoubtedly create a situation of more selfishness. Instead, to feel more generous, a person would repeat I am generous and loving to myself and others. And if the person were feeling selfish, perhaps because of an underlying fearful thought of never having enough, an affirmation would be I am always provided for, or I always have everything I need, or The Universe is a safe and loving place. I am abundantly cared for. Negative statements have a tendency to create more of a situation that is not wanted. As an example, I ran into a friend of mine at the gym. She was upset because she had forgotten her gym bag and now had to skip her workout. She told me shed been repeating to herself before she left the house, Dont forget your gym bag! Her mind focused on the word forget, and sure enough, it created that very fact. If she had been repeating, Remember your gym bag, or I always remember my gym bag, perhaps she would have been able to work out. Finishing the childrens craft project: After the children have written out their affirmation with the help of an adult on a sturdy card or thick paper which when folded can stand up by itself, place the card and the mirror together. The mirror will remind the children of their inner beauty and self-worth as they repeat their affirmation throughout the day. Anyone of any age can use affirmations to create positive thoughts which in turn will create a wonderful life of beauty, purpose and promise! (Note: Enhancements can also be added to the mirror and affirmation if desired, such as sequins, feathers, paper cut-outs, etc.) This article may be re-published freely as long as the following resource box is included at the end of the article and as long as you link to the URL mentioned in the resource box: Connie Bowens books have sold over 50,000 copies worldwide and still counting! The Use and Abuse of Mysticism in The Song of Songs

June 7th, 2008 by talliehisko

By Robert Baird The incorporation of Aristotelian thought into the dogma of Catholicism was not the first attempt to have alchemy co-opted or hermeneutically imbued into the whole system of thought. The fact that Aquinas did this under the tutelage of a Dominican Bishop who is regarded as the forbear of Goethe and Illuminized thought has not escaped me. Frater Albertus Magnus is a name still to be reckoned with in the present day as a person by that name heads the International Alchemical group in Salt Lake City. The fact that Melchizedek and Solomon or others in the family of Jesus are adept esotericists and alchemists should not surprise any real scholar. But let us assume Jesus had good intentions and later scriptural or priestly manipulators sought to bring his real and deep understanding more completely into the Christian model of spiritual growth. Here is a report from Pelikan about a fraud or attempt to do this which was accepted as church dogma for a millennium until the Thomist ideologues made the great furtherance of this under the Jesuit teaching system. … can all be traced to Proclus, the great systematizer of Neoplatonism in the fifth century C.E.; and through him much of it goes back to Plotinus, and ultimately even to Plato himself. Although both Plotinus and Proclus were critics of Christianity, they also owed much to it; {Which might have to do with Christianity having borrowed much from the school of thought they were part of.} and, in turn, their Christian opponents shared much of their Neoplatonism with them, especially these very elements of the mystical vision. Therefore it did not come as a shock when, in the sixth century, there appeared a corpus of Greek writings that seemed to have blended Christian and Neoplatonic elements almost indiscriminately and that bore the name of Dionysius the Areopagite. This Dionysius was, in the report of the Acts of the Apostles, the only man named together with the women who joined and believed {Thus it is likely that the Dianistic or people who saw what was happening to women in the behemoth of Constantinism were motivated to try to correct things a little.} at Athens in response to the preaching of the apostle Paul; {Today there are many scholars who say the Epistles to Timothy once thought to be the work of Paul are not the work of Paul.} by the second century he seems to have been known as the first bishop of the Christian church at Athens; in the sixth century he suddenly produced this massive collection of Christian Neoplatonic speculations; and in the ninth century he came to be identified with Saint Denis, patron saint of France and third-century bishop of Paris.(5) {Eusebius is mentioned in his Biblio. Eusebius is a merchant and purchaser of the bishopric of Paris, I believe. The matter of intrigue from far away Turkey and the Basilidae there who are part of the Semites like Sargon requires more research on my part but I suspect this is another example of the Benjaminite/Maccobean/Elephantine/Rothschild/De Medicis continuum and their desires at work.} Certified as it was with such impressive and all-but-apostolic credentials, the thought of Pseudo-Dionysius was accepted as authentic almost without dissent in the sixth century, and it retained its authoritative position, again almost without dissent, for an entire millennium, not being seriously challenged until the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. (6) There is no question as to Plato being a noble and an alchemist. The matter of his connection to the Sargon lineage and Hyksos in Egypt where his relative Critias was a priest is a matter of suspicion I continue to track and wonder about. For a certainty I do find the esoteric precursor to Hegelian dialectic by these alchemists does exist. I would refer a serious researcher to the chortling done by Fulcanelli about the inculcation of alchemic rituals and symbols into Christendom that can be found in his book on the Cathedrals which the Templars did build atop Druidic or pagan sites. Although Pseudo-Dionysius was undoubtedly the source for much of it, a major inspiration of Christ-mysticism was the interpretation of the Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon{Key to study by Masons today}) as a Christian allegory. As most scholars would agree today, be they Jewish or Roman Catholic or Protestant, the Song was originally a poem celebrating the love between man and woman. But throughout its history it has in fact been read allegorically, and it may even be that it came into the Jewish canon that way. Defending its canonicity at the council of Jamnia in 90 C.E., which stabilized the canon of the Hebrew Bible, the celebrated Rabbi Aqiba declared: The whole world is not worth the day on which the Song of Songs was given to Israel, for all the Scriptures are holy, but the Song of Songs is the Holy of Holies. From this interpretation comes the rule promulgated by the rabbis: He who trills his voice in chanting the Song of Songs in the banquet house and treats it as a sort of song has no part in the world to come. (7) Such is the nature of exclusionary elitism so prevalent in this foul cultus along with its fellow Judaeo/Christian/Islamic kin that continue to breed Armageddon and Rapture end games and wars, as if that is somehow what God might want. The Occultation or Usurpation of Religion and the Zohar: An English version of the Zohar, a guiding text of Jewish mysticism, offers new insights. - By David van Biema - TIME Magazine: April 19, 2004 issue The road winds like a Talmudic discourse, first one way and then another, up toward Daniel Matt’s home in the Berkeley, California, hills. There’s a more direct route that my wife likes, admits Matt, 53. But I find this one more interesting. That’s not surprising. Matt is embarked on a solo journey through one of the most influential and maddeningly difficult works in the history of religious literature. After six years of his labor, Stanford University Press has published the first two books of his translation of the Zohar, the wellspring of Jewish mysticism, or Cabala. He will do nine more volumes, all rendered from the Zohar’s original Aramaic. The work has received ecstatic advance reviews (A superbly fashioned translation and a commentary that opens up the Zohar to the English-speaking world, blurbed lit-crit colossus Harold Bloom), and two weeks ago it won a $10,000 Koret Jewish Book Award for monumental contribution to the history of Jewish thought. Beneath the praise runs an undercurrent of awe that someone was crazy enough to take on the job. The Zohar’s elusiveness dates to its appearance in the Spanish region of Castile around 1280. Written in Aramaic, a language Jews had not composed in for centuries, the book was attributed to a great rabbi of a millennium earlier. But in fact, in the 1930s scholars determined that it was penned by one Moses de Leon and his associates in the 13th century. De Leon had every reason to fake his work’s pedigree: the Zohar was far too radical to be accepted without a fabricated imprimatur. An utterly original 1,800-page mix of Torah commentary, parody, erotic poetry, numerology and experimental narrative devices, it crams some 400 subplots into a Chaucer-like {Chaucer is an alchemist too.} tale of a band of traveling sages. The book’s form alone, says Matt, is a challenge to the normal workings of consciousness. Its theology is wilder still nothing less than the division of God’s personality, which Judaism had always seen as a unity, into 10 interacting emanations, two of them female. One of these, the Shekhinah, was the Zohar’s obsession, the portal through which it pulled believers willy-nilly into the divine drama. Only their prayer and good deeds could save her from hordes of demons and effect her mystic marriage to God’s male aspect, a reunion described in sometimes erotic detail. Without arousal below, de Leon noted, there is no arousal above. Remarkably, his book caught on. By 1600 the Jewish world saw the Zohar as its third holiest text, preceded only by the Bible and the Talmud. Cabalistic study and meditation flourished, and zoharic principles formed the basis of Hasidic Judaism. The Zohar’s use faded as Judaism absorbed the just-the-facts influence of the European Enlightenment, but it left behind dramatic mementos such as the Bar Mitzvah coming-of-age celebration and the gorgeous Friday-evening song welcoming God’s “Sabbath bride”. The Zohar also informs the current Cabalistic resurgence, so fascinating to Jews and spiritual adventurers like Madonna. And this created new demand for an authoritative English version. Enter Matt. By 1995 he had taught Jewish mysticism at the university level, written a book comparing Cabala and scientific cosmology, and translated some Zohar excerpts. Nevertheless he was stunned when Margot Pritzker, wife of the chairman of the Hyatt Corp., who was studying the book, offered to bankroll a full translation. I told her, optimistically, that it might take 18 years, Matt says. And she said, ‘You’re not scaring me.’ The result is not for everybody. From its opening, an extended discourse on the image of a rose in the Song of Songs (”Just as a rose has 13 petals, so Assembly of Israel has 13 qualities of compassion on every side”), the first volume only plunges further into esoterica. Matt’s commentary, which offers tidbits about ancient water clocks and the silkworm’s arrival in Spain, along with his exegesis of mystical concepts, is often twice as long as his translation. Yet there are those eager to use it. Says Samuel Cohon, a Tucson, Arizona, rabbi who has ordered 40 copies at his congregants’ request: I thought; ‘It’ll be too hard’. But there’s a great desire to get at the source. If this is a profound text, then let’s see why. Matt still has the slightly dazed look of an Ahab whose white whale has arrived un-hunted. He hopes to finish his task by age 70. It’s not time that he will regret. When I wake up, it’s all I want to do, he says. I feel like I’m inside De Leon’s mind now. I know the tricks he’s up to. And he’s a genius. This is the most astounding book in Judaism. It is a judgment his own work makes even clearer. (7) I am open to the possibility that the knowledge or tricks he finds are in the Zohar and De Leons mind are long-standing knowledge systems which had been kept secret by the likes of the Tartessians of Spain and Southern France in a line of schools going back to pre-Christian eras. I have many inter-connections which have been made in other books and we have again touched a few of them in regards to the Templars and Rennes-le-Chateau in this book. The Top 10 Mistakes Job Seekers Should Avoid In Contacting An Employer

June 1st, 2008 by talliehisko

By Pam Woods There are numerous tools and resources available to guide job seekers through the steps of a career transition. These tools are very useful and suggest much that you should do. At the same time, some individuals benefit equally by learning what to avoid. If you count yourself in this latter group here is a laundry list of things that “turn off” an employer. Make sure you steer clear of the following: 1. Don’t submit your cover letter and resume using every format known to man. Don’t fax, e-mail and send hardcopy; one submission is sufficient. 2. Don’t “stalk” the employer. Calling and e-mailing daily to see if you have been selected for an interview looks needy and will not encourage the employer to contact you. 3. Don’t say in your cover letter that you’ll call the employer and then not call. Better yet, don’t say you intend to call. Employers don’t have time to field calls from every applicant. 4. Don’t ignore the employer’s directions regarding the submission of your qualifications. For example - if an employer has advertised for a technical writer and requested three writing samples, send three samples. I once received an e-mail from one applicant saying he had so many great samples that he was unable to decide upon three, so he wasn’t sending any. 5. Don’t call the employer and ask them to tell you more about the job before submitting your resume. If you see a position advertised that looks appealing, go for it. You can get the details later. 6. Don’t e-mail and forget to provide the attachments or provide attachments that are blank. 7. Don’t ask if the job is still open within a week or two of an advertisement. Whether the job is open or not is almost irrelevant. You will want to give yourself as many options as possible and getting your resume on file can be important, especially if the employer’s initial offer isn’t accepted or an additional candidate is needed. 8. Don’t expect the employer to do your homework. It’s your job to research the employer. Search the internet, go to the library, and utilize your network to see what information is available about the company. 9. Don’t send a resume without a cover letter. Simply stated, most employers view this as being lazy. 10. Don’t make it hard for the employer to place you. Employers frequently have more than one opportunity available, thus it is important that you specify the position for which you are applying. Pam N. The Importance of Financial Education

May 26th, 2008 by talliehisko

By Christina Hue Education is not restricted to school. Reading and training are part of your education. Set your mind to making money and you will succeed. Right now you have no idea how much money you will make in your life so dont put any limitations on it. Get into the habit of building a positive image about money, It may seem a silly thing to do but the results may impress you. Thoughts are things put them to use for you. Think good thoughts and good things will happen Recently I read a very interesting book from two famous authors; Donald J. Trump and Robert Kiyosaki called Why We Want You to Be Rich. Both of these gurus feel that lack of financial education is the cause of the world economic problem. In this book he shares about vision that most people never see. Both of them share what they think and why they think the way they do, through their eyes you will gain additional insight how one can improve your financial future. Your education fund is the first priority in your goal setting we want to give you a tip on how to make it grow. Once you have set up an account with either your local bank you need to plan how to put money into it. One of the best ways is make deals with your parents. Tell them college is a big dream of yours and that each month you are going to put $20 into your account. Ask them to match it. Your parents will like that you are helping pay for your education and it shows that you are willing to work for it, suddenly you are getting twice as much money and your account is growing faster than it otherwise. In the first year you will put $400 into your account and with interest you could have saved over $500 at the end of the year. Financial education is very important to everyone who wants to seek a better life at a time when we all need to be financially equipped for the future we face. The Intimately Satisfied Marriage

May 9th, 2008 by talliehisko

By Angie Lewis What constitutes intimacy in a relationship? Is it having great sex once a day? Is it being romantically involved? It could be those things, but intimacy is sharing yourself with the one you love because you trust them and you appreciate them. Sex alone is not what makes intimacy. Romance alone is not what makes intimacy. But if you put romance, sex, respect, honesty, communication, and appreciate into the equation and you balance those areas out in the marriage that could very well constitute intimacy in marriage. To feel close to the person you married, you first have to trust them. That includes knowing that they are there for you if you need them. An intimate relationship is a supportive one. When you appreciate, and encourage the person you love on a consistent basis you are forming an intimate bond. Rejecting your spouse in any way is pulling away at those trust levels that marriage so much needs. Couples need and want to feel secure and emotionally involved with their partner. It is quite ironic that couples feel closer and more loving towards each other the more they give of themselves in the marriage. Intimacy is not something that just happens, it is made. It takes two to become intimate, and it takes two to bring and maintain intimacy in the marriage. If only one is working towards being close and the other is pulling away from getting close, then intimacy will not happen. In marriage or in any relationship if you want to be intimate and share a close bond with the person you love, then the effort most definitely has to be put into it. Intimacy is communicating on a deeper level than just talking about the weather and whats for dinner? Many couples take this area of the relationship for granted. They do not realize that their marriage actually thrives on intimacy. Not sharing closeness with the one you are married to is one of the underlying reasons for infidelity in marriage, not just physically, but emotionally as well. And this brings me to communication in marriage. Emotional infidelity is becoming the new fad. It starts out innocent enough, but having an emotional involvement with someone other than your spouse is dangerous to the marriage. Couples do not need to go looking for someone who understands and appreciates them. All they really need to do is to be open and honest in their conversation with the person they married. Communicating on an open and honest level is a part of intimacy. So it is very important to learn proper communication skills on that level. There are two different ways we communicate with our spouse. Productive communication brings something into the relationship to help couples to know and understand each other. From the communication below, ask yourself what you could learn from each other. I like it when you touch me there? I feel it easier to tell you my true feelings when you dont discount my feelings When you reject me, I dont feel very close with you. I felt hurt last night when you made fun of me in front of our guests. Please do not make jokes about me in front of our friends. I would like it if you would try and come home earlier at night, but if your job keeps you working late so you can take care of us, I understand. I would like it if you would not wear that skimpy shirt anymore. I want you all to myself, and I dont think it is a good idea having other men stare at your breasts. I want to protect you, that is one of the ways I feel that I am loving my wife. Could you please not cook spinach souffl anymore, I just dont like it, but everything else you cook for us is wonderful. This kind of communication is productive because it is open and honest. If you happen to say something negative always say something positive in the same sentence too. Productive communication brings couples closer together because they are opening up to each other. And this is what you want in marriage. It is my belief that couples have productive talks a couple of times a week. These communications keep you updated and emotionally involved with the person you married, which couples thrive on for an intimately satisfied marriage.
